As a playwright I am strongly influenced with music. Music allows me to find the words I’m trying to convey or at times even inspire me. The following are songs that I believe are true to world of the play, which is Woyzeck.  Each represents a moment/ aspect of the play.

The first song titled “Paranoid” relates back to the haluciones Woyzeck begins to experience, while making an direct connection to the social conditions and even his partners lack of help.  Take the beginning lyrics for example “Finished with my woman 'cause she couldn't help me with my mind, people think I'm insane because I am frowning all the time, All day long I think of things but nothing seems to satisfy” First, Maries is often dismissing to Woyzeck, she calls him crazy and doesn’t pay attention when he tells he’s losing it. “All day long I think of things but nothing seems to satisfy” I believe Woyzeck really feels helpless at some point, especially when Captain tells him he could not even have morals because he was poor. I’m curious to know if he was better of in wealth would Woyzeck not gone crazy and would have just lefty Marie instead of killing her.

"Paranoid" –Black Sabbath (1970)

Finished with my woman 'cause she couldn't help me with my mind

People think I'm insane because I am frowning all the time

All day long I think of things but nothing seems to satisfy

Think I'll lose my mind if I don't find something to pacify

Can you help me occupy my brain?

Oh yeah

Make a joke and I will sigh and you will laugh and I will cry

Happiness I cannot feel and love to me is so unreal

And so as you hear these words telling you now of my state

I tell you to enjoy life I wish I could but it's too late

She's Actin' Single, I'm Drinkin' Double - Gary Stewart (1975)

I've seen men look at her before

And they think, I don't see

I'd like to think it makes me proud

But, I'm only. Fooling me

I know she'll be lookin' back

The minute I'm not there

While she pours herself on some stranger

I pour myself a drink somewhere

She's actin' single

I'm drinkin' double

I hide my pain

I drown my troubles

My heart is breaking

Like the tiny bubbles

She's actin' single

I'm drinkin' doubles

I know all she plans to do

But I don't know where or when

If I ask who that stranger was

She'll just say, "an old friend"

I'm not weak, I tell myself

I'm stayin' because I'm strong

The truth is, I'm not man enough

To stop her from doing me wrong

My favorite moment in this play is the suggested betrayal of Marie against Woyzeck with Drum major. What really pushes Marie to cheat? “The truth is, I'm not man enough, To stop her from doing me wrong” While I don’t want to justify Marie’s choices- Woyzeck was not doing much for her. In an instance he watched at two male counterparts objectified her and said nothing, even when he tries to comfort Drum major he wimps down. His lack of self-respect and self-esteem is very clear; I think this song does a good job on touch that subject.

Hey Joe- Jimmi Hendrix  (1967)

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand?

Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand?

Alright. I'm goin down to shoot my old lady,

you know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.

Yeah,! I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady,

you know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.

Huh! And that ain't too cool.

[2nd verse (Ah - backing vocal on each line)]

Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down,

you shot her down.

Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot you old lady down,

you shot her down to the ground. Yeah!

Yes, I did, I shot her,

you know I caught her messin' 'round,

messin' 'round town.

Uh, yes I did, I shot her

you know I caught my old lady messin' 'round town.

And I gave her the gun and I shot her!

Alright

(Ah! Hey Joe)

Shoot her one more time again, baby!

Finally, the ending in one song. While Wozyeck did not kill Marie with a gun (it was cheaper to kill her with a knife than a gun) he did kill her because she betrayed him. “Yes, I did, I shot her, and you know I caught her messin round, messin round town.” This song goes straight to the plot and is clear in conveying that infidelity was the cause of a murder. But it was the way this song was written- a conversation between two friends, at some point after Woyzeck kills Marie he also has a conversation with Andres. I think it’s the perfect song to describe the play ‘s main action.
